Cable Rate Increases Planned for March and April

As if our dollars weren't stretched enough, cable companies are planning more rate increases for March and April. Here are some of the areas affected.

Hilton Head Island, South Carolina
Hargray cable is raising rates beginning in March. The cause for the higher rates is blamed on programming cost increases. Premium services will go up to $54.99 a month. Budget-conscious consumers can opt for the Digital Lite package for $47.99 a month.

Charleston, South Carolina
Comcast is raising rates 4.3%. The Digital Start package will rise 6%, up from $50.99 to $54.25 a month for approximately 75 channels, interactive channel guide and video on demand feature.

Ocean City, Maryland
Comcast plans to raise rates 4.5% as a result of higher costs of doing business. Standard cable service will increase from $49.95 to $53.50 per month, as will the Digital Starter package. The more expensive Digital Preferred packages will now range from $74.15 to $128.15 per month.

Oregon & SW Washington
Comcast is raising cable rates an average of 6.6% beginning in April. The Digital Starter package will increase to $58 a month. The rate increase is blamed on rising costs of doing business.

Tampa, Florida
Bright House Cable is raising its rates. Basic cable TV service will go up from $49.49 a month to $52.49 a month. Premium cable channels such as HBO and Showtime will cost $1 more a month.

More Cable Rate Increases for 2009

Here are more cable rate increases coming up for the following areas. Most of these rates are set to go up in March.

Orlando, Florida - Brighthouse plans to raise rates by 4.7% in March because of rising programming costs. Rates for standard cable will go from $52.99 to $55.49 a month. Digital cable subscribers will see an even larger increase, with their rates rising by 5.8%, from $59.99 to $63.49.

New York - Time Warner is raising monthly cable rates beginning in March. Basic cable subscribers will not see an increase. However, standard cable will go up about $4 a month and digital cable will increase $1. DVR costs will also increase by $1. Subscribers to "All the Best” package, which includes cable, roadrunner and digital phone, will see their bills go up $7 a month from $128.50 to $135.50 (before tax). The rate hikes are blamed on higher costs paid out to carry the channels, as well as recent channel additions, including more HD options.

Troy, Alabama - This month, Troy cable raised rates $3 a month for basic cable. The increases are said to be due to the digital switch and higher programming costs.

Cable Rate Increases Planned for February

More cable rate hikes are planned for February across the country. Here's a summary of some of the areas affected by the rate increases.

Charlotte, North Carolina -
Time Warner is raising rates again an average of 4 to 9 percent come February 1, 2009. Basic cable service is increasing just $1 from $11 to $12. Standard services are going from $51.95 to $54.95 per month. The DigiPic 1000 will go from $67.75 to $71.95 a month, the DigiPic 2000 will increase from $85.75 to $89.95 a month, and the DigiPic 4000 will rise from $95.75 to $99.95 per month. The increases are blamed on the rising programming costs of sports and broadcast networks, as well as infrastructure investments.

Georgia and Alabama -
Charter plans to raise rates and restructure packages for new year. The Basic package will remain priced at $19.99; however, the Expanded basic package will increase from $33 to $35. The total basic and expanded package increased $2 up to $54.99 a month, while the HD Ultra View package actually decreased $3 to $5. Digital Premium package only increased by $1. Customers who do not subscribe to standard definition services above Basic may lose some channels due to the restructuring of packages. The package bundles referred to as 'big', 'bigger', and 'biggest' are going away.

New York -
Time Warner plans to rates about $4 a month beginning February 1, 2009, but some customers will see rate hikes as high as $6 depending on their package. The increases are blamed on higher programming costs. Digital Basic will increase to $63.95 per month, while Broadcast Basic service will go up $1 a month to $10. Standard basic service will rise $3.45 to $61.14 per month, and Digital Basic will increase $4 month to $63.95. DVR service will also rise to $7.95, up $1. All the Best programming, which combines digital cable, high speed Internet and phone service, will increase to $125.95, up $6. The phone and cable package and the Internet and cable package will each rise $6 as well, to $95.95 a month. The phone and Internet package will also increase up to $80.95 per month, a $6 increase.

Oklahoma -
Suddenlink plans to raise rates February 1, 2009. Unfortunately for these subscribers, this is second increase in just 4 months.

Colorado -
Come February 1, 2009, Comcast cable is planning to raise rates an average of 3.2%. Standard cable rates will increase from $35.99 to $38.99 per month. The Digital Starter service will go from $54.99 to $55.99 a month. Subscribers to the Premier packages will experience the largest increases with the top tier package increasing from $119.99 to $127.99 a month. The increases are, once again, blamed on the rising costs of programming, as well as investments in technology and services.

Orange County, CA -
Cox Cable is planning to raise rates in 2009, although they haven't said by how much or when. The last price increase was in March of 2008.

Morganton, NC -
CoMPAS Cable rates are set to increase an average of $3 per month beginning on the March billing statements. The increase is blamed on "carriage fees" charged by certain network-affiliated stations to the cable company in return for allowing CoMPAS Cable to rebroadcast their telecasts. This fee is then passed along to the cable subscribers.

Moultrie, GA -
CNS cable services increasing $1 - $4 a month beginning sometime in mid-February to March. The increases are blamed on higher programming costs.

Mount Airy, NC -
Beginning sometime this month, Time Warner will be raising its rates. Basic cable service is going from $10.35 to $12 per month. Standard service is increasing from $54.45 to $57.75 a month. The Digital Access Package is going up from $59.95 to $62.95 a month, and the DIGIPiC 1000 will go up from $69.95 to $71.95 a month. This is the 8th rate hike since 2000, and certain packages have even doubled in price since then. The recent rate increases are blamed on higher programming costs and infrastructure investments.
