Verizon Acquires Alltel - Now the Largest U.S. Wireless Carrier

Move over AT&T, Verizon Communications has now stepped up to become the largest U.S. wireless carrier with the acquisition of Alltel Wireless. The $28.1 billion dollar acquiring was approved Tuesday by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Now even more wireless subscribers residing in rural and small-market metro areas will have access to "America's most reliable" network, an already well-known feature of Verizon thanks to the popular "can you hear me now" commercials. This merger will bring Verizon's subscriber base up to approximately 80 million.
